FROM MEUCCI TO MARCONI

An event in which telephone and radio shine have shown themselves in a superlative way. In our era where we feel close even if separated by thousands of kilometres and, at the same time, are immersed in a world made of mobile phones, radio stations and research on electromagnetic waves, it is interesting to look back in time – even for just a moment – and rediscover that two Italian geniuses, Antonio Meucci and Guglielmo Marconi, have been the fathers of modern communications.

Their stories, their inventions and the evolution of their discoveries have been put on display for the public at Borgo Malanotte during these festivities, precisely in the year in which we have celebrated the centenary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Guglielmo Marconi. The event has helped us remind that our future is profoundly linked to our past. Thus it is not by chance that telephone and radio have been brought together in order to be rediscovered and to remember their origins, which date back to the second half of the Nineteenth century.

It was at that time that Antonio Meucci conceived the telephone, as was officially recognized, even if 150 years later, by the American Supreme Court. Some years down the line it was Guglielmo Marconi who gave life to the radio and pioneered in wireless communications.
What has been proposed by "Cose dei tempi antichi" is thus a leap in the past that spurs us to go forward, and savor with trust what the communication world is holding for us.

Marconi was the creator of the present day civilization of the radio. All of those who, with spirit of initiative and perseverance, have brought us to the present stage of development have built on the foundations laid by Marconi. Everyone considered him the tutelary genius of their work.
