March 18th, 2009 - Liceo Scientifico Elisabetta Renzi, Bologna The Liceo Renzi hosted a lecture-lesson with Francesco Paresce within a series of interdisciplinary events entitled “Guglielmo Marconi, Nobel Prize for physics 1909-2009. A century of creativity from wireless telegraphy to wireless communications”, promoted by the students and teachers of the Liceo Renzi of the Scuole Maestre Pie (High School Renzi of the Maestre Pie Schools) to remember the great Bolognese scientist’s passion and genius. Mr Paresce, worldwide famous physicist and astronomer, and Marconi’s grandson (son of Marconi’s daughter Degna), met the students from the Liceo Renzi of Bologna and from the Liceo Haganässkolan of Älmhult, who came on a study trip from Sweden. THE JOY OF RESEARCH Paresce spoke about the sky observation and the rapid progress of the astronomy tools (from Galileo’s spyglass to the Hubble telescope) in order to introduce the students to some of the key topics of the scientific research, which for too many years in Italy have been disregarded or even looked with suspicion. With quiet words and light humour Paresce described the condition of the researcher who alone faces the vast Universe, and urged the students to practice science without hesitation because it can bring great joy and satisfaction.
