March 27th, 2009 THE SWEDISH ROYAL FAMILY VISITS THE MARCONI MUSEUM In December 1909 Guglielmo Marconi was awarded the famous Nobel Prize for physics by King Gustav V of Sweden, in recognition of his studies and experiments in radio communications. On Friday March 27th the Swedish Crown Prince Carl XVI Gustaf - great-grandson of King Gustav V - and his wife Queen Silvia visited the Marconi Museum at Villa Griffone to commemorate the great Italian inventor. They visited the first laboratory of the young Guglielmo, the silkworms room, and then attended a brief science conference in the Great Hall of the Villa.
Speakers at the conference were Mrs Marilena Fabbri, Mayor of Sasso Marconi, Mr Gabriele Falciasecca, President of the Guglielmo Marconi Foundation, Mrs Barbara Valotti, Director of the Marconi Museum and Mr Cesare Avenia, Managing Director of Ericsson Italia, whose participation proved the scientific cooperation between Italy and Sweden.
The Swedish Royal Family tribute to the city of Bologna and to one of its most famous citizens, on the occasion of the Family official visit to Italy, has held great significance for the centenary opening. |
