A Nobel Teacher: Vincenzo Rosa

March 28th-April 13th, 2009
Candelo (Biella)

In the year of Marconi Nobel Prize centenary, the town of Candelo (Biella) in cooperation with the Guglielmo Marconi Foundation, the Biella Radio Amateurs Association and the Florence Italradio Committee has paid tribute to its famous citizen through a exhibition and a roundtable conference dedicated to Professor Vincenzo Rosa, Guglielmo Marconi’s first teacher.

Vincenzo Rosa was born in Turin on June 11th 1848. In 1884 he married Aurelia Pozzo, from Candelo, and died at Candelo in 1908.
It was Mr Rosa who gave Marconi his first private classes, the only person that Marconi named very often and on public occasions as his teacher of electric subjects. Rosa is one of the key figures in the education of the future Nobel prize winner.
Mr Rosa was not only a good teacher, he was also a skilled researcher and equipments builder, he used to build complex and automatic instruments.
Professor Rosa’s Villa is still in Candelo, it is the last mansion where he lived and where Marconi went many times when he was his student. They used to talk, study and above all make experiments.
Marconi also visited Oropa, where he enhanced his inspiration.
Today a street, close to Via Guglielmo Marconi, has been named after the famous Candelo’s citizen.

The exhibition

A NOBEL TEACHER: VINCENZO ROSA AND GUGLIELMO MARCONI

opened on Saturday, March 28th and closed on April 13th.

Still on March 28th, after celebrating the new Via Rosa (Rosa Street, named after Vincenzo Rosa) with the local Candelo S. Giacomo Band and after visiting Villa Rosa, where a plaque was set, the roundtable conference "Vincenzo Rosa, Marconi’s teacher, 100 years after the Nobel Prize to the 'father' of Wireless" was held with the participation of Elettra Marconi Giovanelli, Professor Gabriele Falciasecca, speakers from the Italradio Committee (Luigi Cobisi, Saverio Meloni, Paolo Morandotti), members of the Sella Foundation and of Professor Rosa’s family.
