«The 2018 Marconi Prize recipient, Dr. Thomas Leighton, is the embodiment of what the Prize honors. Tom and his research partner, Danny Lewin, tackled the tough challenge of efficient and massive distribution of content through the Internet. When they developed the solution, they founded Akamai - now one of the world's premier technology companies - to bring it to market. Tom's story is truly remarkable and mirrors not only the technical innovation of Marconi, but also his creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.

Tom is being recognized for the ideas, innovations and algorithms started at Akamai that fueled the entire content delivery networking industry. Whether you are watching March Madness on your phone or computer, securely viewing your bank statement or getting a software update downloaded to your car, you are experiencing Internet performance and security that is brought to you by content delivery networks.»

Marconi was the creator of the present day civilization of the radio. All of those who, with spirit of initiative and perseverance, have brought us to the present stage of development have built on the foundations laid by Marconi. Everyone considered him the tutelary genius of their work.
