June 7th, 13th, 14th, 2009 FROM MEUCCI TO MARCONI An event in which telephone and radio shine have shown themselves in a superlative way. In our era where we feel close even if separated by thousands of kilometres and, at the same time, are immersed in a world made of mobile phones, radio stations and research on electromagnetic waves, it is interesting to look back in time – even for just a moment – and rediscover that two Italian geniuses, Antonio Meucci and Guglielmo Marconi, have been the fathers of modern communications. Their stories, their inventions and the evolution of their discoveries have been put on display for the public at Borgo Malanotte during these festivities, precisely in the year in which we have celebrated the centenary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Guglielmo Marconi. The event has helped us remind that our future is profoundly linked to our past. Thus it is not by chance that telephone and radio have been brought together in order to be rediscovered and to remember their origins, which date back to the second half of the Nineteenth century. It was at that time that Antonio Meucci conceived the telephone, as was officially recognized, even if 150 years later, by the American Supreme Court. Some years down the line it was Guglielmo Marconi who gave life to the radio and pioneered in wireless communications.
What has been proposed by "Cose dei tempi antichi" is thus a leap in the past that spurs us to go forward, and savor with trust what the communication world is holding for us.

June 16th, 2009 Isa Topic 2009 TESLA, MARCONI, AND THE RACE TO DEVELOP WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY, 1890-1905 Prof. W. Bernard Carlson Carlson, great expert in History of Electricity and Technology has long been working on a biography of Tesla. In his magisterial lecture at Bologna, Carlson has told and compared the stories of both inventors, Nikola Tesla and Guglielmo Marconi, one in the United States and the other in Europe, who were the first to experiment with the hertzian waves trying to transmit at distance. Tesla, born in 1856, had already proved in 1892/93 that electric impulses could be sent from a point to another within few metres without the support of cables. Marconi, born in 1874, had instead transmitted in 1895 a true signal, that is an impulse containing a message, over a natural obstacle. From that point their routes started to diverge year by year. Tesla planned to sprinkle wireless electric power all over the earth (through the ground in emission and through the air in remission). He retired at Colorado Springs where he tried to build a great transmitting station. Marconi worked constantly at developing his wireless communication system (through the air in emission and through the ground in remission) and experimented step by step until 1901 when he could transmit a signal across the Atlantic. Marconi was successful, because he had clear in his mind both the goal and the means to attain it, whereas Tesla’s idea was vague and, as far as we know today, also unfeasible. Nevertheless Tesla, before Marconi, was able to send hertzian waves at distance. There is thus no doubt that Marconi was the pioneer of wireless telegraphy, while Tesla was that of wireless power connection.

May 23rd, 2009 The curious coincidence of THREE CENTENARIES (birth of Bologna Football Club, birth of the Giro d’Italia - the Tour of Italy bicycle race - and Nobel Prize to Guglielmo Marconi) has been commemorated during the Giro stage at Bologna. In the morning, Francesca Menarini (President of Bologna Football Club), Angelo Zomegnan (Director of the Giro) and Stefano Alvergna, representative for the Nobel Prize Centenary Committee, have held a meeting in the beautiful setting of the Farnese Chapel. In the afternoon, after a live special dedicated by Rai (Italian State Broadcaster) to Marconi and Villa Griffone, Francesca Menarini and Giancarlo Corazza have rewarded the stage winner with a plaque and a medal in memory of this triple centenary.

March 26th-29th, 2009 Duse Theatre, Bologna QUELLO DELLA RADIO (Radio Man) Script and Direction: Giorgio Comaschi Set Designer: Matteo Soltanto Produced by Procope Studio After his lucky debut in Australia and before moving to Canada for a new tour, Comaschi has presented in Italy his play-monologue which goes through the main steps of Marconi’s life and scientific career, using images and films of Marconi’s time.
The play tries to understand some of the human aspects of the scientist’s extraordinary adventure, and reflects in particular on Marconi’s relationship with his mother, Annie Jameson, and on his cultural and geographical background, Bologna’s province, which was the birthplace of the great radio telegraphy discovery. |

March 12th-22th, 2009 The Scienza in Piazza events are a Marino Golinelli Foundation’s project whose goal is «involvement, dialogue and participation: watching, touching and loving science». The events, now reaching their 4th year, propose together with Bologna City Council a series of meetings and activities including the exhibition GUGLIELMO MARCONI RADIO COMMUNICATIONS PIONEER AND NOBEL PRIZE WINNER The exhibition describes in 13 panels the scientist life and the main steps of his career of discoveries and brings into life Marconi’s pioneering spirit of tireless researcher for which he became one of the key figures of the 20th century. The exhibition has been organized by the Marconi Foundation. |
