Marconi Prize

Prestigious scientific recognition in the field of telecommunications, the Prize (that amounts to $ 100.000), managed by the Marconi Society, is assigned each year to scientists that have distinguished themselves in the development of communication technology applications designed for human progress, thus evoking the extraordinary commitment and role that Marconi – scientist, engineer, inventor and entrepreneur – played in the history of telecommunications.

The activity of the Marconi Society (that currently has its office in San Francisco) continues that of the Guglielmo Marconi International Fellowship Foundation, founded in 1974 by Gioia Marconi Braga, daughter of Guglielmo Marconi, in celebration of the centenary of her father's birth (April 25th 1874). These are the words spoken by the founder (and first chairman of the American Foundation until her death in 1996):

CREATIVITY IN SERVICE TO HUMANITY

When the Marconi International Fellowship was created in 1974, it was our intention to honor the memory of my Father in the centenary of his birth. It was also our intention to recognize and encourage the creative work of scientists and technicians in the communication field, whose research, according to the Marconian tradition, continues to advance on the frontiers of knowledge, in the interest of all humanity. The qualities expressed by my Father, his faith in divine inspiration, his genius for transforming abstract theories into practical realities, his audacity in attempting that which appeared unattainable, his perseverance when faced with failure, his scientific integrity and his pioneering devotion, his imagination and trust in paving a way in the unknown, are virtues that we believe should be recognized in others in the world who, with courage and broadmindedness carry out significant steps along a path that was initially traced by Guglielmo Marconi.

Marconi was the creator of the present day civilization of the radio. All of those who, with spirit of initiative and perseverance, have brought us to the present stage of development have built on the foundations laid by Marconi. Everyone considered him the tutelary genius of their work.
